Many still stuck, claim victims trafficked as sex slaves by agents

Date:

Amritsar, June 29: The two women, who were rescued from Oman, were trafficked by travel agents and pushed into prostitution. The victims say there are many others who are yet to be rescued.

Even worse, suspects are threatening the victims, thanks to the shoddy police probe. A victim’s family from Tedi village said their daughter-in-law was taken to Oman by a travel agent, Rahul, in January. Her mother-in-law said she was introduced to the agent by an elderly woman who worked with her at a brick-kiln.

“The woman assured the victim that the agent would take her to Singapore for free, adding that another woman from Dhariwal village would also be accompanying them. Six months later, they took her to Oman, saying she would get a good salary as a domestic help. We are now getting calls from her that she is in trouble and needs help. We asked the agent to get my daughter-in-law back, but he is demanding over Rs 2 lakh,” she said.

Investigating officer Vavinder Mahajan said: “Our priority is to get another woman back. A probe will be conducted. The agent has sent many women to such countries after getting an agreement signed from them. We are in touch with travel agent Rahul.” He said the police had also recorded the statement of Ferozepur victim, who had just returned home. She had claimed that there were around 30 more women who were pushed into prostitution.
