Jalandhar, October 6: It was a proud moment for a truck driver’s family at Bajwa Kalan village in Shahkot when his daughter Prabhdeep Kaur (19) made it to the New Zealand Police two days ago.
Lehmber Singh had moved to Auckland about 17 years ago when his youngest child, Prabhdeep, was just two. He toiled all these years to secure a better future for his three kids. He is a satisfied man today.
“I was waiting for this day. After completing high school, Prabhdeep had started her over a year-long training in the police. But when her final selection came two days ago, I was not with her,” said Lehmber, who is at his native village with his brother’s family.
“Since then, congratulatory messages are pouring in. Prabhdeep has been asked to join the force on November 9. I am waiting to be with my family back there in these exciting moments,” he said.
Lehmber shared, “Since childhood, my daughter had been dreaming to join the police. I made her take up sports as physical strength is the biggest test for cops there. She emerged as a fine hockey player. I would even keep my grocery store closed there to accompany her for her matches.”
Talking about the struggle in his life, Lehmber, who is a matriculate, said, “I was driving truck in Shahkot and pursued the occupation when I moved to New Zealand. I used to ferry catering items to airports. Later, I set up a fruits and vegetables shop. But since all my children are settled now, I chose to hang up boots and enjoy a long holiday at my village.”
While Prabhdeep could not be contacted, her brother Jagdeep, who runs an architecture firm in New Zealand, said: “A lot of incidents of violence against women take place here and Prabhdeep has been very touchy about such cases. She feels that she will like to handle such cases well.”
