Amritsar, Sep 11: To apprise the youth of the Sikh religion and culture, and the community’s contribution to freedom struggle, the SGPC has decided to commemorate “Shaheedi Diwas” on a regular basis. Kirpal Singh Badungar, SGPC chief, said this at the opening of Saragarhi gallery set up at the newly built Saragarhi Niwas near the Golden Temple on Sunday.

Several relatives of Saragarhi martyrs were honoured by the Sikh apex body at the event.

Former Army Chief Gen JJ Singh, British Army officer Duncan Campus, Saragarhi Foundation chairman Gurinder Pal Singh, and defence officials of Britain and France were present at the function.

The portraits of Saragarhi martyrs are installed in the gallery and a Saragarhi Chowki model is set up there.

Tarunbir Singh Benipal and Jagdeep Singh have made the portraits. “Since the photographs of the soldiers were unavailable, the portraits were made on the basis of the features of martyrs’ descendants,” they said.

Gurinder Pal said only 19 portraits could be installed in the gallery. “Two families had migrated to Pakistan. So connection could not be established with them,” he added.
