Rewari villagers lock school gates, demand more staff

Date:

Rewari, August 30: Angry villagers on Wednesday locked the main gates of Government High School, Chhillar. With no math or science teacher for almost a year, they said the studies of their wards had been hit. Accompanied by students, they staged a dharna outside the school for over three hours, obstructing teachers. One of them filed a police complaint.

Tension mounting, Rewari SDM Jitender Kumar, along with local officials of the Education Department, rushed to the village. He assured the protesters their grievance would be examined and a way out found. Thereafter, the villagers opened the school gates, warning they would resume their stir if their demand was not met “soon.” The gram panchayat, they said, had passed a resolution on September 11 last year, demanding math and science teachers at the school, but nothing had come of it. The school has a strength of 156 students (68 in primary and 88 in secondary wing).

“We have been running from pillar to post, but none has paid any heed to our demand. The residents locked the school gates only to draw the attention of the higher authorities,” explained sarpanch Balram.

A Class IX student said they were forced to take the help of private coaching centres, paying exorbitant charges.

As a temporary arrangement, a teacher had been deputed at the school, Rewari DC Ashok Sharma said, adding he had written to the education authorities to depute more teachers at the school. Rajeev Ratan, Director (Secondary Education), said the process of “rationalisation of teachers” was underway to cope with the staff shortage in government schools.
