Retired SSP’s taxi business under Vigilance scanner

Date:

Patiala, January 10: Former PPS officer Surjit Singh Grewal allegedly ran a taxi service in the name of a Sangrur resident with 15 Innovas bought with ill-gotten wealth, according to the challan being prepared by the Vigilance Bureau (VB).

Grewal, who is accused of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, had served as the SSP in Moga and Fazilka, besides the SSP (Vigilance), Jalandhar, before retiring in 2014. Transactions in the name of his family members and other relatives are also under the VB scanner.

The VB had booked Grewal on December 21 last year following a complaint by US-based Sarabjit Singh, who had accused the ex-cop of indulging in corruption from 2009 to 2014. “The officer and his family members have fixed deposits worth around Rs 25 crore, besides shares and around 40-kg jewellery,” reads the complaint.

Last week, a local court had dismissed his anticipatory bail application, following which he moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where his plea is yet to be heard. As per the VB, the accused bought land worth Rs 13.26 crore in the name of his son, Jasjit Singh, at 12 places. “He purchased land worth Rs 60 lakh in the name of Jasjit’s father-in-law Ranjit Singh and land worth Rs 85 lakh in the name of Harvinder Singh Mann, owner of Mann Travels Company, Sangrur, on which he constructed three houses,” the challan says.

“While his official earning from 1999 till retirement was around Rs 2.12 crore, he spent about Rs 12.19 crore during this period,” reads the FIR registered at the VB police station here.
A senior VB official said, “We can also summon the ex-SSP’s relatives as they are linked to the black money he had deposited and spent.” Grewal could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
