Tarn Taran, Feb 19: Police on Sunday arrested a man after he along with his wife was booked for allegedly providing shelter and financial help to slain gangster Vicky Gounder’s aide Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi Kaura, and another wanted criminal Gurwinder Singh.

The accused have been identified as Harbhajan Singh and his wife Ranjit Kaur of Khadoor Sahib.

Goindwal station house officer (SHO) Sukhinder Singh said a police team was patrolling near Bibi Amro Gate in Khadoor Sahib in search of some miscreants when they got a tip-off that the accused had been providing food, shelter and financial aid to dreaded criminals.

“Soon after, the team carried out a raid and arrested Harbhajan Singh on the spot while his wife is absconding,” he said. A case under Sections 212 (harbouring an offender), 216 (harbouring offender who has escaped from custody or whose apprehension has been ordered) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused.

A Tarn Taran police official said, “Gopi Kaura, a resident of Nagoke village, is a dreaded gangster and was a close aide of Vicky Gounder. He is wanted in many districts of Punjab in cases of murder, attempt to murder and robbery.”

The officer said, “Another gangster of the area is Gurwinder Singh of Khadoor Sahib, who is also wanted in many cases, including murder of a Khadoor Sahib man. He is an aide of gangster Jaspal Singh alias Pala, who was arrested by the crime investigation agency (CIA) wing of the Tarn Taran police after an encounter at Harike Pattan on Friday night. During the encounter, one constable of Punjab police received two bullet injuries after Pala opened fire at him.”

He said, “Palla and Gurwinder were also booked by Rajasthan police and were in the Amritsar jail. They escaped from police custody when they were being taken to a court in Rajasthan on May 19, 2017. Gurwinder who is also wanted by the Rajasthan police, is still at large.”

This is the second case in a month in the district when the police registered case for providing shelter and financial aid to gangsters. On January 28, Tarn Taran police had arrested two aides of Vicky Gounder — Amritpal Singh Bath of Mianpur village and Lovepreet Singh of Nagoke in Khadoor Sahib. Both were accused of giving shelter to Gounder after he escaped from the hight-security Nabha jail in November 2016.

However, both Amritpal and Lovepreet got bail from a local court on February 2.
