Chandigarh July 14: Inspector Inderjit Singh, who was arrested by the special task force (STF) of Punjab Police with 4 kg of heroin in Kapurthala on Monday, has confessed to having “links” with drug suppliers in Amritsar region.

Sources in the STF said that Inderjit, who was posted as crime investigating agency (CIA) in-charge in Kapurthala, has also admitted that he owned the drugs recovered by the STF from his two official residences in Jalandhar and Phagwara. He is on police remand till June 19.

STF inspector general of police (IGP) Parmod Ban is personally interrogating Inderjit, who was reportedly close to many senior officials of the Punjab Police.

An STF officer told HT that the chief minister’s office had called STF chief ADGP Harpreet Sidhu to give a briefing in the case.

“The CMO has categorically directed the STF chief to carry on investigations without feeling any pressure, even if Inderjit comes out with names of senior officers as his mentors in the drug trade,” sources in the CMO said.

Meanwhile, director general of police (DGP) Suresh Arora has also sought a detailed report about the case from the STF and sources said that Inderjit is likely to face dismissal in the wake of the probe conducted by the IG (border zone) and the SSP Tarn Taran, a few days before the STF nabbed the inspector.

This probe was ordered by the STF after analysis of the cases registered by Inderjit as CIA in-charge in Tarn Taran in 2013. In three of these cases, huge recovery of heroin was made. But all the accused in the three cases were released because of tempering in witness records made by Inderjit.

“Inderjit is co-operating in the questioning. This is the only detail we can share with the media at present,” said the STF chief.
