NRI loses Rs 5 lakh, $5,000, passport to snatchers

Date:

Chandigarh, January 21: There is no let-up in snatching incidents as two more snatchings have been reported from the city. In one of the incidents, a bag containing Rs 5 lakh, $5,000, a pair of earrings and a passport was snatched from an NRI woman in Sector 38.

According to the police, the victim, Sumna Devi, a resident of Sector 38, was on a rickshaw along with one of her relatives when two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched her purse. The victim failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle.

The police were informed about the incident following which a team rushed to the spot.
Deepak Yadav, DSP (South), said there was a wedding at the victim’s house due to which she was carrying a huge amount in her bag. Since the victim was an NRI, she was also carrying US dollars, he said.

The police have registered a case at the Sector 39 police station.

In another snatching incident, two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a bag from a man on the road separating Sector 38 and Sector 40. One of the snatchers was nabbed by a passerby after a chase. The accused escaped from the spot following which an eyewitness, Udaybir, a resident of Mohali, chased them and managed to nab one of the accused, identified as Vishal, a resident of Sector 25. His accomplice, however, managed to escape with the snatched bag. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.
