Man sets wife on fire over minor dispute in Amritsar, booked

Date:

Amritsar, February 5: A 32-year-old man has been booked for allegedly setting his wife on fire in Amritsar, police said on Sunday.

The accused, Jasbir Singh, was booked on Saturday for setting his wife on fire by dousing her with petrol over a minor dispute at Nawan Pind, which falls in tehsil Jandiala Guru of Amritsar, they said.

Police said the victim, Bhupinder Kaur, 30, has suffered 70% burns and is in a serious condition. She is being treated at Guru Ram Das Hospital here. Police said the victim was rushed to the hospital by neighbours.

The victim in her statement has told police, “I got married to Jasbir eight years ago and he has always been questioning my character. He would also fight with me on a daily basis.”

She has also told police, “On Friday, when I was preparing dinner, my husband came from outside and doused petrol on me. I immediately fell unconscious. When I regained consciousness on Saturday, I found myself in the hospital with burns.”

Station house officer (SHO) of Jandiala police station, Harshdeep Singh, said that the police could only take a brief statement of the victim, due to her serious condition.

The SHO said, “We have booked the accused under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). “Raids are being conducted to nab the accused and we will arrest him soon,” he said.
