Jaspal was contacted by The Tribune after he joined the Congress in the presence of Youth Congress leader Brinder Singh Dhillon at Nurpur Bedi, near here, on Friday.

It was on June 21 that Sandoa was roughed up when he went to expose alleged illegal mining in the Nurpur Bedi area. Jaspal, who was accompanying him, was also thrashed. The police had booked eight accused in the case. One of the eight accused, Amrit Singh, was arrested after he was spotted thrashing Jaspal in a video clip.

Later in July, Jaspal, giving clean chit to accused Amrit Singh, stated before the police that he did not hit him and rather tried to protect him from the assailants. Following this, the police filed an application in an Anandpur Sahib court where Jaspal again deposed in favour of Amrit and consequently the court discharged Amrit.

On Friday, after joining the Congress, Jaspal said he was a grass-roots worker of the AAP and feeling disappointed due to infighting in the party. When asked about his reversal of allegations regarding thrashing by Amrit Singh on June 21, he said he was obeying the orders of the MLA. When he was reminded that Sandoa had already denied his role in giving clean chit to Amrit, he said it was not possible for a PA to give such a statement to police without the consent of his boss.

Denying Jaspal’s allegations, Sandoa claimed that he did not know anything regarding the clean chit given to Amrit in the case.
