Fix devices to curb smoke: PPCB to mills

Date:

Chandigarh, June 28: The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has directed the mills in the industrial town of Mandi Gobindgarh to instal air pollution-control devices with immediate effect.

Mills emitting toxic smoke and other residue polluting the environment have been asked to instal a canopy-type smoke collector on their rolling units so that the smoke is filtered before being released into the atmosphere.

A wet scrubber or bag filter in the device will suck poisonous substances and other residue from the smoke. “This new device will cut down the respiratory particulate matter in a big way. The PPCB will also extend technical help in the installation process,” PPCB Chairman Kahan Singh Pannu said.

According to Environment Engineer Rakesh Nayyar, a time limit has been fixed for the installation of these devices and the mills have been told to follow norms in letter and in spirit.

The board has threatened stern action against erring mills which will not follow the installation instructions.
Pannu said, “The board is committed to creating a healthy and pollution-free atmosphere, which is essential for every human being. It has also made an action plan to create awareness among owners of induction rolling mills regarding wet scrubber or bag filter.”
