Ottawa, March 6: Canada’s Indian-origin MP has urged the Canadian people and government to recognize the difference between the ‘swastika’, an ancient and auspicious symbol for Hindus, and the 20th-century Nazi symbol ‘Hakenkreuz’, saying there is no similarity between the two. This move has been welcomed by the Hindus of America.
American Hindus had denounced recent attempts by some vested interests in Canada to use this as an opportunity to promote hatred against Hindus.
Canada’s MP Chandra Arya said, “As a Hindu of over one million Canadians of different religious faiths and especially from Canada, I appeal to the members of this House and all the people of the country for the sacred religious symbol of Hindus, the Swastika and the Nazi symbol of hatred.” I call for a distinction. The Nazi emblem is called ‘Hakenkreuz’ in German or ‘Hooked Cross’ in English.
This ancient and most auspicious symbol of Hinduism is still used today in our Hindu temples, in our religious and cultural rituals, at the entrances of our homes and in our daily lives, he said. Don’t compare it to the Nazi symbol.
