Devastated, kin ready for cremation

Date:

Jalandhar, April 2: Surinder Kaur’s tears have dried up. She has even lost vision of an eye while waiting for her younger son Nishan Singh, who had left for Iraq around five years ago.“Nishan was a sincere boy who had seen a tough time since childhood. He wanted to change our fortunes. I never thought that he would return home in a casket,” said Surinder Kaur of Sangowal village near Ajnala in Amritsar.

Things were more complicated for Manjeet Kaur (name changed) who was seven months’ pregnant when she heard that her husband Kanwaljit Singh of Rupowali village (Fatehgarh Churian) went missing in Iraq along with 26 other men from Punjab in 2014.

After two months, she delivered a child and returned to her parents. Her daughter is now four-and-a-half years old. She is not even aware of the tragedy that struck the family. While Manjeet Kaur’s whereabouts are now not known, there are reports that she has remarried.

Kanwaljit Kaur, mother of deceased Dharmendra Kumar of Batala in Gurdaspur, said: “My son is finally returning home, but not the way I expected him to. But I will fulfil my promise and adorn him like a groom before sending him on his last journey.”Manjit Kaur, wife of deceased Davinder Singh of Roorka Kalan village, said: “Uhna de aaun di umeed tah khatam ho gayi.

Hun taan maut de aaun daa intezaar shuru ho gaya (The wait of his return has ended, but the wait of my end has begun).”While the families are gathering courage to face the situation, there seems to be no end to their sufferings.
