Delhi woman kills mother-in-law in fit of rage, bid to burn body gives her away

Date:

New Delhi, Sep 27: Driven by daily family quarrels, a woman allegedly murdered her 62-year-old physically challenged mother-in-law at Mandawali in east Delhi on Tuesday night. Police said the accused Kanchan Kapoor, 30, hit her mother-in-law Swarna on the head with a wooden baton, killing her on the spot. She then tried to set the body ablaze to make it look like an accident. She, however, failed in her attempt and only the victim’s legs got charred.

“After preliminary questioning the accused confessed her crime and was arrested. Further investigation is on,” said Omvir Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east Delhi).

Police said Kanchan lived with her husband Sumit and three kids, below five years of age, on the first floor of a building. Her mother-in-law Swarna used to stay alone on the ground floor flat of the same building. Sumit, was the sole bread earner and the family had to make do with his income of Rs 18,000.

“The victim was physically challenged and could not climb the stairs. The family, however, had food together and Sumit and Kanchan would often come to her flat through the day,” Singh said. Police sources said the two women often have arguments over different family issues.

On Tuesday, the police received a call around 12.30am from Sumit who works in a fast food restaurant chain, claiming that his mother has been murdered. Sumit told the cops that he had returned home late at night and found his mother dead.

“The blood stains on the body and in the room and the charred legs raised suspicions. On interrogation we found some discrepancies in the daughter-in-law’s statement. She broke down and confessed during further interrogation,” he added.
