Watch Channa Mereya: Same story of love in the time of caste system

The trailer of much-awaited Channa Mereya which marks the debut of singers Ninja and Amrit Maan has been released. Much propounded as an epic love saga with Ninja and Payal Rajput in lead roles, Channa Mereya is directed by Pankaj Batra of Bambukat fame.

The movie rights for Hindi version of the film have been bagged by Karan Johar.

Here’s a dekko of the trailer:

The news of the launch of Channa Mereya with Ninja in the lead was announced by him through Instagram in November last year.

Later, Amrit Maan too announced his participation in the project.

The Film Channa Mereya is a remake of Marathi movie Sairat. Sairat was a blockbuster romance drama, which was released in 2016 under the banner of Aatpat Production, Zee Studios and Essel Vision Productions. Zee Studios is also the producer of the movie Channa Mereya in its Punjabi avatar.

Sairat was the first Marathi film to cross ₹50 crore mark. The film also became the first Marathi film to gross over ₹100 crore worldwide. The film was selected for the 66th Berlin International Film Festival under its Generation 14 Plus section. The lead actor Rinku Rajguru was awarded a National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) at the 63rd National Film Awards in 2015 “for her effective portrayal of a lively girl who defies societal norms but ultimately has to face the wrath of her family”.

In the Punjabi story too, we wil have Ninja and Payal Rajput falling for each other much against the typical Punjabi societal norms. We will see college friends with contrasting personalities and coming from different castes falling in love. However, their relationship will fall prey to the stiff family principles.

How many changes does this epic love saga goes through to suit the Punjabi setup will be known coming July 14.
