Date:

Chandigarh, February 5: Former Chief Minister and senior leader of Congress Rajinder Kaur Bhattal is expected to stake a claim to the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. Bhattal told Babushahi.com that while she will put forth her interest to contest the elections, it would be for the senior leaders to accept her request.

“I will request my party to allot me the ticket from Sangrur constituency and I believe they will accede my request. Punjab Congress is a strong and united party and I hope that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh will support me,” said Bhattal while talking to Babushahi.com from Delhi.

It is learnt that many Congress leaders and MLAs from Sangrur are rallying for Bhattal to be the party candidate from Sangrur. A five-time MLA, it is for the first time that Bhattal is staking claim to the Lok Sabha constituency.

Bhattal had in the last assembly polls contested from Lehragaga in Sangrur district but was defeated by SAD leader Parminder Singh Dhindsa. Bhattal belongs to Lehragaga.

Sangrur, one of the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies of Punjab, would face a multi-cornered contest this time. While Bhagwant Mann, the sitting MP of Sangrur, would represent Aam Aadmi Party, Simarjeet Singh Mann would represent Akali Dal (Amritsar). Meanwhile, SAD and newly formed Punjabi Ekta Party would also field their candidates.
