AAP burns effigies of Union Minister Lekhi across Punjab for using derogatory language for farmers

Date:

Chandigarh, July 23

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Friday protested against BJP leader and Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi for using derogatory language for the farmers, who had been fighting against the three black farm laws and burnt her effigies across the state; demanding an apology. Expressing anger against the ruling Narendra Modi-led central government, the AAP workers and leaders said that the Aam Aadmi Party would keep the voice of the farmers loud from the streets to Parliament till the three anti-farmer laws were repealed.

In a statement issued from the party headquarters here on Friday, AAP’s Kisan Wing state president and MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan said that the AAP leaders and workers had staged protests against the Modi government at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Patiala among some other districts and burnt effigies of Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi.

The party leaders accused the BJP and the central government that their ministers and leaders deliberately use foul language against the farmers, who get fumed and engage in unconstitutional activities. They said that the BJP leaders should remember that the farmers are the ‘annadatas’ of the country; not hooligans or terrorists. “The Constitution of the country gives full freedom to the citizens to peacefully protest and hold dharnas to protect their rights and the country’s legislators along with political and social leaders from all over the world have given full support to the farmers’ movement,” they said.

Advising minister Lekhi to know the history of the BJP, the AAP leaders said that the late BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had in the past been a staunch supporter of the farmers’ movement and respected the farmers by calling them ‘annadatas’ of the country. “But today the power-drunk BJP leaders and the Narendra Modi government are branding the farmers as terrorists and anti-nationals,” they said. The leaders said the result will be declared by the farmers and the common people of the country against the BJP in the 2022 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
