Haryana floor test: Stone cold to pupils’ plight

Date:

Hisar, December 26: Amid the biting cold, several government schools in Bhiwani, Hisar and Mahendragarh districts of Haryana have been teaching students the ground realities in a literal way.

With classrooms and desks lacking, the students are forced to attend classes on the floor either in verandahs or in open spaces. The worst comes when the cold wave intensifies as the students are told to skip classes.

At Ghuskani village in Bhiwani, the school has been functioning in double shifts — 150 students in each — from a two-room structure. While primary students are taught in the evening shift, Class VI-X students come in the morning. The old building had to be demolished to pave way for a new one.

Tashvir Singh, husband of sarpanch Pinky, said he had often advised students: “It’s better to skip classes than fall ill.” He said according to the  authorities, Rs 1.43 crore had been sanctioned for the  building. “But I don’t know when it will take shape.”

In Gokalpura village, the secondary school with 140 students has been functioning from two rooms since February 2017 when its building was razed. “In view of the cold, we locked the school yesterday,” said zila parishad member Anil Gokalpura.

The situation is no different at the primary school in Mahendragarh, the home town of Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma. Students have to sit on the floor as the school lacks furniture.

District Education Officer Ram Avtar Sharma said the problem existed in schools where unsafe buildings had to be demolished. “I will visit the school in Gokalpura.”
