Amritsar train mishap: Mother finds infant 48 hours after train tragedy

Amritsar, October 22: Separated from her 10-month-old son after the Dasehra train accident, Radhika, on a visit to the city from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was reunited with him on Sunday. “Accompanied by my daughter, I was sitting near the rail track feeding my son. A speeding train crossed us after which I realised my son was not with me,” recalled Radhika, who is admitted to the local Amandeep Hospital.

All this while, the child had been in the care of the staff at the Amritsar Civil Hospital, the District Child Protection unit and the Social Security Department.

Suneet Makkar, CJM and secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, said: “Our volunteers visited the hospital and the child was handed over to the District Child Protection unit.” The infant was in the custody of officers of the Department of Social Security at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital when he was recognised by his aunt Preeti, Radhika’s sister, among those hospitalised after the train tragedy.

The child has multiple head injuries.The doctors say his condition is stable. “He will be shifted to Amandeep Hospital to be with his mother,” said Dr Vipul Bhalla, a junior resident doctor.

Radhika’s husband is yet to be traced.
