For the February 4 Punjab elections, the Aam Aadmi Party has been the quickest to release its list of probable MLAs. The entry of the party in Punjab has not only given the voters an option to break free of the two-party routine, but it has also brought with it the hope of a Better Punjab.
Buoyed by the success in the Lok Sabha elections by an unprecedented victory on four of the 13 seats, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has made the bipartisan politics being played for the Vidhan Sabha elections both entertaining and exciting. One look at the AAP list and you can see that Kejriwal has been able to play the ‘aam aadmi’ card well. Most of the candidates fielded are not big names. However, the turncoats and defectors like Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Aman Arora, Anu Randhawa and Jagmeet Brar have been accommodated with prominent constituencies.
However, India Today-Axis opinion poll clearly gave a majority to Congress in its Opinion Poll conducted in mid-October. The earlier opinion polls conducted by Huffpost-CVoter and VDP Associates’ opinion poll conducted in the month of July of 2016 gave a thumping majority to AAP. But the fact these polls were conducted in April and the equation has changed drastically since speak a lot about the predictions made by these polls.
According to the opinion poll conducted by Punjabikhurki.com in the month of November, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal suffered a major jolt with a whopping 74% voters “not wanting to see the Akali Dal in power” only let alone being the CM. Of the 919 people who voted in the online poll, the present Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal found favour with only 15% while Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was the favourite with only 7%.
