30,000 women left behind by NRI husbands, Punjab govt to bring them back

Date:

New Delhi, May 11: The NRI wing of the Punjab government will initiate the process for bringing back NRI husbands who have left behind their wives., referred to as ‘honeymoon brides.’

According to the NRI wing of the Government of Punjab, there are almost 30,000 wives with immigrant husbands.

President of Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGPC) Manjeet Singh GK and General Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote to the Gyani Gurubachan Jathedar Shri Akal Takht requesting it to ask for a thorough inquiry of to-be NRI husbands before performing the Anand Karaj (Sikh wedding ceremony)

Manjeet Singh also addressed letters to Union minister of home affairs, Rajnath Singh, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and Punjab chief minister Amrinder Singh.

‘Honeymoon Bride’ is a common slang to refer to women whose husbands have fled the country soon after getting married.

One such victim, Satvinder Kaur, disapproved of the term, saying it was derogatory and objectified women and therefore should not be used.
Manjeet Singh said an NRI cell for such affairs would be formed by the DSGPC.
