Date:

Batala, November 29: At least 16 assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) were among 19 Punjab Police employees who sustained injuries when a police bus rammed into a tractor-trailer at Panj Graian village, 10 km from here, on the Sri Hargobindpur road early this morning.

All ASIs are investigating officers dealing with different cases in the Punjab and Haryana High court. They belong to 13 police stations of Batala police district.

The bus was on its way to the High Court in Chandigarh. A total of 26 cops were travelling in the bus.

Dr Sanjeev Bhalla, Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Batala Civil Hospital, said of 19 people who were rushed to the hospital around 5.45 am, two were serious and they had been referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar.

“Ten of the injured have been discharged after first aid. Seven are still admitted to the emergency ward. A five-member team of doctors is attending to them,” said Dr Bhalla.

The victims claimed that the accident took place when the bus driver failed to see the sugarcane laden tractor-trailer due to fog. “The vehicle suddenly came on the main road from a link road. Driver Ranjit Singh failed to spot it due to fog. A car parked on the wrong side of the road added to the confusion. The impact was such that the tractor-trailer was totally smashed. The driver got trapped and had to be extricated by villagers,” said ASI Harpal Singh, one of the victims.

Senior Superintendent of Police Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said they were probing the matter. “The driver’s statement is yet to be recorded because he is not stable. Both his legs have been fractured,” he said.

SDM Rohit Gupta said he had directed the hospital authorities to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
